Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas Picton. A rough and foul-mouthed man, Picton was nonetheless a great leader and was shot dead while heroically cheering on his men. He wore civilian clothes rather than a uniform, including a shabby greatcoat and top hat, and carried an umbrella. (ASKB)

The westernmost French column was finally overthrown after one of its officers was shot dead as he tried to seize the Regimental Colour of the British 32nd Foot. But the second column was still trading fire and the third, apparently not stopping to deploy, had pushed right on to the ridge crest and was fiercely engaged with the 92nd (Gordon) Highlanders. Then, suddenly, the British Union Brigade of 900 heavy cavalrymen burst decisively into the fray. (At the same time, the Household Brigade, consisting of the 1st and 2nd Life Guards, the 1st Dragoon Guards and the Royal Horse Guards, routed the French cavalry west of the Brussels road). The Union Brigade, which had advanced from its reserve position to the north before being unleashed, had been hidden by the ridge until it was right on top of the astounded French infantry. It consisted of three magnificent regiments: the English Royal Dragoons, the Irish Inniskilling Dragoons and the Scots Greys, which ferociously cut their way into the now disordered French infantry. Some Frenchmen fought like tigers, but most were so jammed together that they were powerless to defend themselves. Disordered masses of men threw down their muskets and poured back across the valley.
